WELCOME TO THE 2020 CREWE GOLF CLUB WINTER LEAGUE WEBSITE

Final standings Saturday 7th March 2020

Congratulations to Kev Worsley winner of the Neville Platt Trophy as top placed player in the Gold division. Kev took the divisional title ahead of Colin Brazier by just 0.25 points, with debutant Bryan Hunt in third place.

In Silver Paul Taylor could not be caught by David Vass in second, and David Williams secured third place ahead of Denis Tryno on account of his higher success rate in the two’s competition.

In Bronze Paul Wilkinson maintained steady form in the final few fixtures to secure the divisional title ahead of Lee Meakin, with Ed Parker in third.

In Brown Rob Sheffield took top place despite languishing at the bottom of the table in the early weeks. Rob finished just 1 point ahead of Alex Peake, with Steve Tomkinson in third place.

Commiserations to the divisional losers and organizers of the Winter League for the 2020/21 event, namely John Farrall, Peter Leslie Reed, Malc Stevens and Neil Bennett. You have earned the right to carry the torch for the next few months and prepare for the next battle to commence.

Jack Ford won the Clive Barnett Trophy for scoring the most two’s (4) over the duration of the season.

To all the other participants of the winter league congratulations for surviving the worst the British winter could throw at us, and our sincere thanks go to Colin Brazier, Ian Carr, Tony Williams and David Pointon for plotting the course for a successful conclusion of the Winter League 2019/20.

The annual Mike Grice Competition and Trophy was won with 45 points by John Farrall and Peter Leslie Reed winning on countback over Ian Walters and Callum Smith.

The three-frame snooker final was won by Matt Snape and Andy Billington (subbed by Julian Cotton) who vanquished Steve Cuthbert and Paul Wilkinson.

For those new to the winter league there is more detailed information about the format and rules listed below and on the links to the left-hand side of the page.

The winter league organisers encourage ‘Ready Golf’.

Here are some recommendations for “ready golf” from the R&A.

·         Be on the tee 10 minutes before your allotted tee time, and if all players are present then if possible start your round ahead of schedule.

·         Playing ‘out of turn’ if other players are not ready to play.

·         Hitting a shot when safe to do so if a player farther away faces a challenging shot and is taking time to assess their options.

·         Shorter hitters playing first from the tee or fairway if longer hitters have to wait.

·         Hitting a tee shot if the person with the honour is delayed in being ready to play.

·         Hitting a shot before helping someone to look for a lost ball.

·         Putting out even if it means standing close to someone else’s line.

·         Hitting a shot if a person who has just played from a greenside bunker is still farthest from the hole but is delayed due to raking the bunker.

·         When a player’s ball has gone over the back of a green, any player closer to the hole but chipping from the front of the green should play while the other player is having to walk to their ball and assess their shot.

·         Marking scores upon immediate arrival at the next tee, except that the first player to tee off marks their card immediately after teeing off

·         The fastest route around the course is likely to be achieved by carrying your golf bag.

Winter League Programme 2019 - 2020

General Information

For the established players the format of play remains the same although some important early information is detailed below to help everyone.

The published fixtures display the first 8 weeks of competition, the second half fixtures will be published after the end of the first half of the season. The format of the draw means that players will never play with the same partner or against any of the same opponents in the 8-week programme both before and after the Xmas break.

At the half way point the second half of the draw will be announced on the website, and similarly players will also not play with the same partner or any of the same opponents in the second phase. However it is possible that players may play with other competitors that they may have played with, or against, in the first phase. This cannot be avoided but will be kept to an absolute minimum.

Match timetable, courtesy to other golfers and the avoidance of slow play

Due to the popularity of the winter league the organizers are mindful that other members that wish to use the course are treated with the utmost courtesy by members of the winter league. We would ask that you respect other members’ rights to use the course and where possible give other players access to the first and eleventh tees to commence their games.

Matches will commence from the 1st and the 11th tees and will be fixed during the course of the season. Players are reminded to ensure they are aware of their start times and are on the tee and ready to play at least 10 minutes in advance of their allotted tee time.

Courtesy should be afforded to players leaving both the tenth and eighteenth greens and dovetailing of play is recommended.

The winter league schedule has been put together assuming that matches can be completed in four hours or less. Failure to keep to a schedule of 13 minutes per hole may jeopardize the ability of the final groupings to complete their games in daylight, especially in Mid-December when light is at a premium. On 14th December (the fixture with the shortest daylight hours) sunset is at 1545. Players that tee off on the last slots on the 1st and 11th holes (1150) will have just 3 hours and 55 minutes respectively to complete their matches. If your partner or opponents are not keeping up with play it is your duty to remind them.

If you need a sub……

Winter leaguers do not have to confine their search to those on the substitute’s sheet, and may seek a reserve from any other playing member, adult or junior. Please be aware it is your responsibility not only to organize a substitute but also to ensure your substitute is aware of his commitment, so no-shows will be penalized regardless of the excuse. If you believe that your search for a substitute has been exhausted please contact the professional on 01270 585032 and make him aware. Dave Wheeler will then contact the organisers and other members to see if a suitable reserve can be arranged. If this cannot be done then ‘no-show’ penalties will be applied as detailed in the Competition format and Scoring section below.

For information about the course status go to the club website using this link www.crewegolfclub.co.uk, or alternatively contact the professionals shop on 01270 585032.

Abandonment policy

Please ensure you are familiar with the Winter League policy on match abandonment, the details of which can be found on the Timetable and Rules page.

The Clive Barnet Trophy and Weekly Tankard

Members will be aware that Clive Barnet, a member of the winter league for a number of years, sadly passed away in 2012. To honour his memory the ‘two’s-on-the-eighth’ competition was extended to cover the number of two’s on all par threes over the course of the season, and the winner will be presented the Clive Barnet Trophy at the end of the season.

Additionally the Clive Barnet Tankard will be awarded to the player that records the most two’s each week (or in the event of a tie the player recording the highest victory score). That player will then be awarded the tankard which will be filled with his favourite tipple and propose a fitting toast to fellow winter leaguers.

Snooker

Those wishing to participate in the Winter League Snooker Competition will have a chance to register their interest with the snooker organiser Martin Ford. A draw will be made for pairings and the fixtures will be published in due course. Substitutes are permissible if your partner is not available and a fixture needs to be played urgently.

Handicaps will be allocated by Martin Ford and the allowance is half the difference between the combined handicaps to calculate the number of shots start a team will have.

Any matters for arbitration must be referred to Martin Ford.

Competition Format and Scoring

The league season will split into two phases, one before the end of the year, the other in the New Year.

In Phase one there will be 8 fixtures, where players will be paired with a different partner each week. They will then form a team that will play a betterball matchplay competition against a pair of opponents. It is possible that you may be drawn with the same partner more than once during the competition, and it is also possible that they may play against an individual opponent more than once, but never in the same pairing.

Five points will be awarded for a win, and three for a draw. Additional points will be awarded for the margin of the victory. For each hole of margin one quarter of a point is available. So, for example, if team A beats team B by 5 and 3, then each player from team A will be awarded 6.25 points (i.e. five points for the win and one and a quarter points for the margin).

The names of substitute players are listed below. Players unable to make a fixture are urged to ensure that a substitute is arranged. A five point penalty deduction will be applied if they fail to do so. A maximum of three substitutes will be permitted during the Winter League. If a player exceeds this allowance then they will receive only half the points won when a substitute is used on the fourth and subsequent occasions during the league season.

In the event that a player has to play his match as a single against a pair due to a ‘no-show’ by his partner, he will automatically be awarded two-and-a-half points, which in the event of a defeat will reduce by a quarter of a point for each hole of the margin of the defeat. For example, if the player loses by 4 and 2, then he will be awarded 1.5 points (i.e. the two-and-a-half points for playing solo, less four quarter-points for the margin of the defeat). Should the solo player win or halve the match he will be awarded double the match points, but single the margin of victory points. For example if a solo player wins by 2 and 1, he will be awarded two-and-a-half solo points, ten win points (twice-five), and half a margin of victory point, giving thirteen points in total.

A league table will be published each week showing players positions. After phase one of the competition the league will be split into divisions, and players will be awarded point within their own division.

For the final league fixture of the season the top and bottom players of each division will be paired against the second top and second bottom players of a different division, with third top and bottom players against fourth top and bottom and so on. The overall winner of the League will be awarded the Neville Platt Trophy.

The final fixture of the season is the Mike Grice Trophy, an annual Stableford competition. This takes place on Saturday 7th March 2019 and is then followed by the Snooker Competition Final and the Winter League Dinner and Presentation Evening.
